Why Do We Exist
The Institute of Christian Spirituality exists to empower individuals, within community, to cultivate an awareness of God’s presence in all things for the purpose of imitating Christ in the reconciliation of all things.
How Do We Accomplish This
In response to the deep spiritual and existential needs of our times, the Institute for Christian Spirituality is dedicated to fostering a holistic, transformative approach to Christian spiritual formation. Through immersive practices, intellectual depth, meaningful dialogue, and compassionate action, we nurture an integrated and grounded life of faith.
What Do We Do
Westernized Christianity has slowly been inundated by modern, secularized culture. The institute of Christian Spirituality desires a practical return to participation with the sacred. There are four impoverished areas, or needs, we have identified which serve as barriers to this participation.
1. Need for Deep and Transformative Spirituality
The American church often prioritizes belief over practice, leading to a disconnect between faith and lived experience. Broader culture, focused on productivity, rarely fosters introspective or embodied spirituality, leaving people longing for direct, transformative encounters with God.
Response: Immersive Spiritual Practices
In an era where spirituality often becomes abstract or shallow, we guide our community through a rich, immersive ecology of practices drawn from Christian monastic and contemplative traditions. From this rich and vast landscape we create a balanced framework that promotes wisdom, increases self-awareness, reduces ego-salience, and fosters connection with God, self, others, and creation.
2. Need for Depth and a Coherent Vision of Life
Simplistic, rigid, and narrow teaching can leave believers without a cohesive worldview, while broader culture’s fragmented, conflicting, or erroneous narratives create existential confusion. Many crave a more profound understanding that integrates faith with modern knowledge and ethical challenges.
Response: Intellectually Enriching Content
To address the desire for a thoughtful, informed spirituality, we offer lectures, seminars, and courses that blend biblical wisdom, theology, philosophy, ethics, and scientific insights. This integrated learning shapes a shared vision of life that harmonizes with God’s reconciliation of all things, inspiring a compassionate, socially conscious worldview.
3. Need for Sincere, Relational Engagement
In an age of digital interactions and polarized discourse, both the church and broader community lack spaces for honest, vulnerable dialogue. People desire environments that allow for vulnerability and promote real connection—the requisite ingredients for growing a community pursuing spiritual honesty.
Response: Intentional Dialogue
In a world where genuine dialogue is often replaced by unilateral or superficial exchanges, we invite individuals into safe, structured (ritualized) spaces for heartfelt discourse and exploration. Here, individuals can genuinely explore what it means to live a spiritual life in today’s world, while fostering mutual understanding and community support.
4. Need for Compassionate, Practical Action
American individualism can lead to isolated compassion without practical outreach. Both the church and society are often critiqued for failing to address real-world suffering, driving a desire for compassionate action that bridges faith and tangible support.
Response: Impartial Compassion
Recognizing society’s divisions, we emphasize compassion that transcends personal biases and honors our shared humanity. We first honor others by revealing their value, beauty, and sanctity. Through community service initiatives and support groups, we work to relieve suffering by meeting practical needs, dissolving barriers, and embodying the dignity and interconnectedness that bind us all.
By addressing these pressing needs, the Institute seeks to transform both individual lives and the broader community, contributing to a society grounded in wisdom, compassion, and unity.
What Values Inform Our Action
At the Institute of Christian Spirituality, our values are foundational to nurturing a deep, transformative spirituality that addresses the challenges of our times. Made manifest through the incarnation of Christ and rooted in the Christian tradition, these values—charity, humility, curiosity, compassion, courage, wisdom, and hope—guide how we engage with God, ourselves, and others in a journey of growth and reconciliation. Each principle invites us to live with greater purpose and integrity, creating a compassionate, resilient community where individuals are empowered to seek truth, embrace hope, and cultivate meaningful connections. Together, these values shape a path toward a more integrated, compassionate, and hopeful life.
1. Charity
We seek to will the good of the other, as other.
2. Humility
In being human, we recognize and accept our limitations, allowing for openness to learning, growth, and connection with others.
3. Curiosity
We seek to approach each person, idea, and experience with an open mind and a desire to understand.
4. Compassion
We seek to respond to others with empathy and a commitment to alleviating suffering.
5. Courage
We seek to face challenges and uncertainties with resilience and integrity.
6. Wisdom
We seek to see reality as it is and to align ourselves with it.
7. Hope
We seek to maintain a grounded optimism which is rooted in reality, resilient, and committed to meaningful progress.
8. Justice, Mercy, and Grace
We seek to recognize what we are due, celebrate the relinquishment of our just desserts, and rejoice in our unmerited gifts.
These values are the working explication of our Savior’s great command: Love God and Love neighbor. This is our foundation.
